I am also from Ethiopia; who arrived in NYC a couple of months before the overthrow of the emperor to work my way thru engineering school; for which I was the least prepared for; which forced me to leave college and work as an orderly in the L.A. It was there while taking care of the patients; I asked one of them what I should do with my life; who advised me to pursue what I loved; which was to be engineer and return home to become part of the solution. Forty six years later I am a Senior Transportation Engineer for State of California. I am proud that our nation; inspite of its struggles help raise some one like Dr Verghese.

@@dominicj7977 I think this is one of the reasons why he is so compassionate: I know other indian doctors who are like him. I think it depends on their culture. Dr. Verghese did not grow up in India, but his parents are indians.

Some takeaways: 1) Start with a story, it should have an arc. 2) Start with a simple question and throw it to the audience. Reward the correct answer thereby building trust. 3) Get them involved so that they learn things and not check-out in the middle of the lecture 4) Learning != Amount of Content 5) Learning = % Content Retained out of the total amount of content. 6) Maintian active participantion of interest. a) Maintain eye contact b) use the board - reduces zoning out c) walk around the room. d) take time for student questions. e) let students crumble your lecture - this gives them hope to participate and also learn more. f) Break-outs (time exhaustive though) g) Writing exercise at the end of the lecture - revision and pinpoint on the main points of the lecture 7) A structure can help in making people follow 8) Break a difficult concept into smaller parts, thereby making it more demystified. 9) Make the course layered. Where you provide the basic outlines and then the students start filling in the content based on their understanding 10) Give examples of what can be done with the taught content.

Coincidentally, my classmate and I had an argument about professors like the one speaking. He was saying that at an Ivy League school, if a student can't "get it" then she shouldn't be a graduate student at a prestigious research university. My argument was that professors have a responsibility to teach, not just focus on their own research or their favorite students. I can't tell you how many papers my classmates and I have submitted and have not received comments on; or how many of us fail week after week at making oral reports. I can only think of the impact this professor is having on her students as they develop in life and in their discipline. They'll likely go on and break the cycle of professors who don't care to develop the next generation of intellectuals. Thank you for showing us there are professors in academia who care.
